TOPIC: High schools in Victoria

High schools in Victoria 4 years, 1 month ago #88

  • july
Hello dear Readers, we used to live in Victoria (and are temporarily, ok semi-permanently, overseas, homeschooling my 13 y.o. HFA son... that's aspergers with more learning disabilities...)

I finally learned today that there are NO high schools in the whole of Victoria with a Learning Support class attached! (some of the high schools in NSW do, and I don't know yet about the other states). Wow.

But what really surprised me (I know, ignorant me) was that to get ANY assistance for your child, you need to have a whole bunch of reports that are less than TWO years old, including: Paed diagnosis, Psych diagnosis, "Cognitive Assessment", Speech pathology report, along with "Diagnosis of Autism" (huh, wasn't that the Paed and Psych stuff??) and (WOW) "Confirmation of diagnosis of Autism"!!

Then I thought... that is a lot of expensive reports for a few measly hours of teacher aide time!

And wouldn't the parent need to repeat this same tortuous process every two years???

Sometimes I just feel happy that my son is out of the whole Australian education system, at least for now!

Are you serious? Look - I'm pretty sure Victorian State Schools can apply for extra funding, as one of my grandchildren is receiving it.

but if what you are saying is in fact as it is, then I don't get it? why waste all that time and resources at state-schools, only to cut the help out at a very critical time?
